A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who fled after the explosion was found not long after. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene showed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the residence was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official thought the blast had occurred on a floor above the doorway and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, noting that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
