🔗 Share this article The Devastating Change Just One Year Has Brought in the United States In late October 2024, the situation was completely separate. Prior to the national election, considerate residents could acknowledge the country's serious imperfections – its inequities and imbalance – however they still could perceive it as America. A democratic nation. A place where constitutional order held significance. A country led by a dignified and decent public servant, notwithstanding his older age and declining health. Currently, in late October 2025, numerous citizens scarcely know the country we live in. Persons suspected of being undocumented migrants are rounded up and shoved into vans, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for a grotesque dance hall. Donald Trump is persecuting his adversaries or perceived antagonists and insisting federal prosecutors surrender an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are dispatched across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The military command, relabeled the War Department, has – in effect – freed itself of routine media oversight while it uses possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars of taxpayer money. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are handled as nobility. “America, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has tipped over the limit toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” a noted author, commented this past summer. “Ultimately, swifter than I thought feasible, it did happen here.” Each day begins to new horrors. It is hard to comprehend – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined we have become, and how quickly it has happened. Yet, we understand that Trump was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling previous administration and even after the warnings linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – despite Trump himself declared plainly he would be a dictator solely at the start – sufficient voters selected him over Kamala Harris. As terrifying as today's circumstances is, it's more frightening to recognize that we have only been nine months into this administration. Where will an additional three years of this downfall leave us? And what if the three years turns into something even longer, as there is no one to restrain this ruler from determining that another term is essential, perhaps for security concerns? Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There will be legislative votes the coming year that may bring a different balance of power, if Democrats regain the Senate or House of the legislature. We have government representatives who are attempting to impose some accountability, such as lawmakers currently starting a probe into the attempted cash appropriation by federal prosecutors. And a leadership election in 2028 could start us down the road to healing just as the prior selection placed us on this regrettable path. There exist numerous residents marching in the streets throughout communities, like they performed in the past days during anti-authority protests. A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of America is stirring”, just as it did following the Red Scare during the fifties or throughout anti-war demonstrations or in the seventies crisis. During those times, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance. He claims he recognizes the signs of that resurgence and sees it happening currently. For proof, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition to a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous defiance by media to agree to government requirements they only publish authorized information. “The slumbering entity consistently stays inactive till specific greed becomes so noxious, some action so offensive toward public welfare, certain violence so noisy, that he has no choice other than to stir.” It’s an optimistic take, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may prove to be right. At the same time, the big questions remain: can America ever recover? Can it reclaim its position in the world and its commitment to constitutional order? Or must we acknowledge that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed? My cynical mind indicates that the latter is accurate; that all may indeed be gone. My positive feelings, nevertheless, tells me that we must try, by any means available. In my case, working in journalism analysis, that’s about pushing media professionals to adhere, more thoroughly, to their duty of holding power to account. For different individuals, it could mean engaging with political races, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to defend voting rights. Not even one year prior, we existed in a separate situation. Twelve months later? Or in several years? The reality is, we are uncertain. The only option is to strive to continue fighting.
